Churn Rate Calculator
Share of customers lost during a period.
How it's calculated
- Definition
- Customer churn rate is the percentage of customers who stop buying or cancel during a period, usually a month or a year.
- Formula
- Churn rate = (customers lost during the period ÷ customers at the start of the period) × 100. Exclude customers gained during the period.
- Benchmark
- For subscription businesses, monthly churn under about 2% is generally healthy and above 5% needs attention. Annual contracts naturally show lower monthly churn.
Our take
Blended churn hides the story. Split it by cohort, plan and acquisition channel before acting; usually one segment is churning and the rest are fine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate monthly churn rate?
Divide the customers who cancelled during the month by the customers you had on day one of that month, then multiply by 100.
What's the difference between customer churn and revenue churn?
Customer churn counts accounts lost. Revenue churn counts recurring revenue lost, including downgrades, so losing one big account can matter more than ten small ones.
